UNHCR UN DESA IISD Reporting Services The high-level event on “Leaving No One Behind: Energy for Humanitarian Response and Sustainable Development” will take place on Sunday, 18 September 2016 at UN Headquarters in New York, US. Hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the event will convene on the eve of the UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants, and on the margins of the 71st UN General Assembly.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes the first-ever universal energy goal, Sustainable Development Goal 7, to “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.” Today, the organizers note, 80% of refugees and displaced people in camps have minimal access to energy, which exacerbates health and security risks and environmental degradation, while restricting economic and educational opportunities. The event will explore how sustainable energy can improve conditions for the more than 125 million people affected by humanitarian crises, while building long-term resilience to mitigate future crises.

Partners in the event are: the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, the IKEA Foundation, the Moving Energy Initiative, Schneider Electric, and UN-Energy.

IISD Reporting Services, through its ENB+ Meeting Coverage, has provded a briefing note from the High-Level Event on “Leaving No One Behind: Energy for Humanitarian Response and Sustainable Development”, which is available in HTML and PDF.
