ITTC Enters Final Stages of Deliberations

The forty-third session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) completed its fourth day of deliberations in Yokohama, Japan today. In the morning, participants convened in parallel sessions of the associated committees.

The Committee on Reforestation and Forest Management (CRF) met to discuss, inter alia, a draft decision on the adoption of guidelines for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in tropical timber producing countries. The Committee on Finance and Administration (CFA) resumed discussion of the draft biennial budget 2008-2009, with debate focused around whether funding for a proposed new ITTO Assistant Director position can be approved prior to the ITTA, 2006 entering into force.

The Committee on Economic Information and Market Intelligence (CEM) and the Committee on Forest Industry (CFI) met to discuss key agenda items, including the draft terms of reference for a study on subsidies affecting tropical timber products proposed by New Zealand.

At lunch, the Panel on Sub-Account B of the Bali Partnership Fund met to identify sustainable forest management projects eligible for funding. For the remainder of the afternoon, participants convened in an open-ended drafting group led by Vice-Chair Katharina Kuehmayer, Austria, to address issues that have eluded consensus thus far, mostly related to the draft Biennial Work Programme.
