Highlight for Monday, 9 November 2009

The Forty-fifth session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) and the Associated Sessions of the four Committees (Finance and Administration; Economic Information and Market Intelligence; Forest Industry; and Reforestation and Forest Management) opened today in Yokohama, Japan. In the morning, delegates listened to opening speeches by the ITTO Executive Director, the ITTC-45 Chair, and dignitaries from Japan, Ghana, and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). The Council addressed organizational matters, including ascertainment of quorum, distribution of votes, and adoption of the meeting's agenda, and discussed the Report of the Informal Advisory Group.

In the afternoon, Producer and Consumer groups held separate caucus meetings. Following this, the Council resumed, with discussions on: entry into force of the ITTA, 2006; ITTO Biennial Work Programme 2008-9 Progress Report; and listened to a presentation on the results of a diagnostic mission to Cameroon to identify and rank factors constraining SFM.

In the evening, participants attended a reception hosted by ITTC-45 Chair Michael Maue (Papua New Guinea) and ITTO Executive Director Emmanuel Ze Meka.
