Ceremonial Tree Planting by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai
During the lunch break on Tuesday, 17 May 2005, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai of Kenya planted a tree in the garden on the north lawn of United Nations headquarters. Also participating in or attending the planting were Professor Judith Mbula Bahemuka (Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations), Rachel A. Arungah (Permanent Secretary of Kenya's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources), Jomo Kwame Sundaram (Assistant Secretary-General of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs), Professor Manuel Rodriguez Becerra of Colombia (Chairman of UNFF 5), Pekka Patosaari (Coordinator and Head of the UNFF Secretariat), many members of Kenya's delegation, other delegates and media.
