Representatives of governments, international organizations, and civil society organizations (CSOs) will come together for the 57th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council to develop, adopt and evaluate the operational policies and programs for GEF-financed activities.
The Council, which meets twice a year and is the GEF’s main governing body, comprising 32 Members appointed by constituencies of GEF member countries, will discuss, among other issues:
- Updated policy on minimum fiduciary standards, which, as ENB’s summary of the 56th GEF Council meeting notes, will include provisions on third-party assessment of Agencies’ compliance;
- GEF’s Private Sector Engagement Strategy;
- The Strategic Country Cluster Evaluation of the Small Island Developing States;
- A Methodological Approach for Post Completion Verification;
- Work Program; and
- Relations with the Conventions and Other International Institutions.
The Council will hear, among other reports, the report of the Chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel and the report on the findings of the assessment of GEF Agencies’ compliance with policies on environmental and social safeguards, gender equality, and stakeholder engagement.
In addition, the Council will consider amendments to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the GEF regarding secretariat services to the Adaptation Fund Board as well as proposed topics for discussion at the CSO consultations during the 58th and 59th GEF Council Meetings.
The 57th meeting of the GEF Council will take place from 17-19 December 2019, in Washington, DC.
Delegates will also convene as the 27th meeting of the Council for the Least Developed Countries Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund (LDCF/SCCF) on 19 December 2019 to hear the LDCF/SCCF progress report and to be updated on programmatic, budgetary and other issues. The Council meeting will be preceded by a consultation with CSOs on the theme, “Illegal Wildlife Trade: A Civil Society Organization’s Perspective,” on Monday, 16 December 2019.
