2nd GRASP Council Meeting
The Second Council Meeting of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) opened on Tuesday, 6 November in Paris, France. Taking place at the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters, participants heard opening statements from Doug Cress, GRASP Coordinator and Qunli Han, Director of the Executive Office, Natural Sciences Sector, UNESCO, as well as video messages from Achim Steiner, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director and Jane Goodall, Founder, the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace. Participants also heard reports from the GRASP Executive Committee, Scientific Commission, and the Secretariat and discussed the GRASP Strategic Review.

In the afternoon, participants heard the first of the Great Ape Seminars on Great Apes and Illegal Trade, which addressed issues such as law enforcement, the need for data, the lack of prosecution and convictions and the role of international organizations in combatting illegal trade. Participants also discussed the draft revision of the Global Strategy on Great Apes.

In the evening, delegates attended a reception and photo exhibition.
