2nd GRASP Council Meeting

The Second GRASP Council Meeting reconvened on Wednesday, 7 November in Paris, France. In the morning, participants discussed the draft GRASP Priority Plan 2013-2016 as well as the draft revised Rules for Management of GRASP. Participants exchanged views on the goals of and priority work areas for GRASP as well as the composition of the GRASP Executive Committee, the periodicity of Council meetings and the creation of Great Ape Ambassadors.

GRASP Patron and President of Conservation International (CI), Russ Mittermeier, presented on the work of the IUCN Primate Specialist Group in assessing great ape conservation status and increasing public awareness, and suggested actions for the second decade of GRASP. He also announced a contribution of US$ 5000 from the CI Primate Action Fund to the GRASP-Ian Redmond Conservation Award.

In the afternoon, participants convened for the second of the three Great Ape Seminars on Great Apes and the Green Economy. During the panel presentations, participants heard perspectives on, inter alia, financing green agendas, biodiversity and green growth, the contribution of the green economy to orangutan conservation, payments for environmental services and the contribution of great apes tourism to the green economy.

In the evening, a working group on the draft GRASP Priority Plan 2013-2016 met to revise the draft Plan to ensure that all partners’ views were taken into account.
