The second meeting of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will take place from 30 June - 9 July 2014 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The theme of the Forum is “Achieving the Millennium Development Goals and charting the way for an ambitious post-2015 development agenda including the Sustainable Development Goals”.
The establishment of the HLPF was called for by the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) in June 2012 in its outcome document, The Future We Want. In July 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution deciding that meetings of the Forum will be convened every four years under the auspices of the General Assembly at the level of Heads of State and Government; and every year under the auspices of ECOSOC.
Replacing the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), the HLPF is expected to “provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for sustainable development, follow up and review progress in the implementation of sustainable development commitments, enhance the integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development in a holistic and cross-sectoral manner at all levels and have a focused, dynamic and action-oriented agenda, ensuring the appropriate consideration of new and emerging sustainable development challenges”.
The first week of the second session is expected to include moderated dialogues on a number of issues, while the second week will include a High-Level Segment. The programme can be found here.
