The 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-26) to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) will convene in Antigua, Guatemala, from 20 - 21 June 2018.

The IAI is a regional intergovernmental organization devoted to researching the science and economics of global change. It supports a range of projects and initiatives related to global change to help countries meet their obligations under the Paris Agreement, the UN Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and other international frameworks.

The CoP will address, inter alia:

  • financial and budgetary matters;
  • membership of the Financial and Administrative Committee;
  • the report of the Executive Council;
  • whether to accept Brazil’s Rede Clima and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as IAI associates;
  • the Tripartite Agreement regarding the IAI’s structure, including exploring how to make it work; and
  • a long-term communications strategy and fundraising strategy.

All of the IAI’s science programmes are funded through the US National Science Foundation. CoP 26 is expected to ask other funding agencies to join in co-funding programmes, and also ask countries to step up their commitments to the IAI.

The IAI CoP, which meets on an annual basis, will be held back to back with:

  • the 45th and 46th meetings of the IAI Executive Council; and
  • the joint meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) (which makes recommendations to the CoP regarding the science agenda, long-range plans and the IAI’s annual programme) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) (which provides advice to the CoP and the IAI Directorate regarding the application and design of science in policy and decision making).
