Geneva, 25 April—The 24th meeting of the Animals Committee (AC) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) convened from 20-24 April 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. The AC heard reports from intersessional working groups and issued recommendations on issues including: sharks and stingrays, non-detriment findings (NDFs), sea cucumber fisheries, the review of significant trade (RST), and periodic review of the appendices. Antalya, 24 April—The 30th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which convened from 21-23 April 2009 in Antalya, Turkey, focused mainly on the scoping process for the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), with a view to providing guidance to the climate change experts who will define the outline of the Assessment during the AR5 scoping meeting to be held in Venice, Italy, from 13-17 July 2009. The Panel also decided to proceed with the preparation of a Special Report on managing the risks of extreme events and disasters, and agreed to hold a number of expert meetings on topics such as human settlements and the detection and attribution of anthropogenic climate change. Nairobi, 18 April—The concluding Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation for Land and Water Management was held at UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, from 16-17 April 2009. The event was co-hosted by UNEP and the Minister for Development Cooperation of Denmark, Ulla Tørnæs. Participants adopted a Nairobi Statement consisting of six guiding principles on sustainable development, resilience, governance, information, economics and financing and partnerships in the context of climate change adaptation in land and water management.
