Manila, 28 November—The East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2009, which convened from 23-27 November in Manila, Philippines, concluded with the signing of the Agreement Recognizing the Legal Personality of Partnerships in the Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), a regional programme supported by the Global Environment Facility, the UN Development Programme and the UN Office for Project Services. This Agreement transforms PEMSEA into a fully-fledged international body to work for sustainable development of the region’s coastal and marine areas. Eleven Ministers and high-level delegates also signed the Manila Declaration on Strengthening the Implementation of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) for Sustainable Development and Climate Change Adaptation in the Seas of the East Asia Region. Guilin, 21 November—The Country-Led Initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) met from 17-20 November 2009, in Guilin, China, focusing on forests for people and the role of national forest programmes (NFPs) and the Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests (NLBI). A Co-Chairs’ summary report, listing conclusions and recommendations of the meeting, was prepared and will be submitted for consideration by the UNFF at its ninth session in 2011. More.
