Public Private Partnerships
This issue of Linkages Update highlights a number of key developments during the last few weeks, including the opening for signature of the first multilateral environmental agreement in a decade (the Minamata Convention on Mercury), the approval of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Summary for Policy Makers on the physical science basis of climate change, efforts to influence the ongoing processes to define sustainable development goals and the post-2015 development agenda, and increased attention to the possibilities involved with public-private partnerships. IPCC 37 Adopts Two Methodology Reports

18 October 2013: Convening in the midst of the finalization of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), the 37th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 37) adopted two methodology reports: “2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories: Wetlands” and “2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol.” The IPCC also undertook initial discussions on mapping its future, and agreed to establish a task group on the future of the IPCC, which would meet in conjunction with IPCC sessions, report on progress at IPCC 39 and IPCC 40, and make recommendations to IPCC 41. Water Summit Calls for SDG on Water

11 October 2013: The Budapest Water Summit adopted an outcome document titled 'The Budapest Water Summit Statement: A Sustainable World is a Water Secure World,' which calls for development of a dedicated and comprehensive sustainable development goal (SDG) on water. Addressing the opening session of the Summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the multiplying impact of climate change on water scarcity, calling for less water-intensive and more climate-resilient crops. Governments Adopt Minamata Convention on Mercury

11 October 2013: The Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Minamata Convention on Mercury and its preceding open-ended intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting, which were held from 7-11 October 2013 in Kumamoto and Minamata, Japan, concluded with the opening of the newest multilateral environmental agreement for signature. UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management Adopts Strategy

9 October 2013: The seventy-fourth session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) adopted the UNECE Strategy on Sustainable Housing and Land Management 2014-2020, which includes four themes: sustainable housing and real estate markets; sustainable urban development; sustainable land administration and management; and cross-cutting themes. 10 October 2013: The tenth World Wilderness Congress (WILD10) convened with the theme 'Make the World a Wilder Place.' More.

ITPGR Governing Body Focuses on Enhancing Implementation

28 September 2013: The Fifth Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) adopted a series of resolutions that aim at enhancing implementation, including through the establishment of an Ad hoc Working Group on enhanced implementation of the Treaty's Multilateral System for Access and Benefit-sharing (MLS). UNCCD COP 11 Establishes Science-Policy Interface, Intersessional Group on Follow-up to Rio+20

26 September 2013: Delegates at the Eleventh Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 11) concluded their two-week meeting with the adoption of 41 decisions. More.

Forest Investment Program Pilot Countries Share Experiences in National Institutional Arrangements

26 September 2013: Participants at the Fifth Forest Investment Program (FIP) Pilot Countries Meeting heard presentations on Indonesia's institutional arrangements and proposed FIP activities, and discussed their national institutional arrangements. More.
