IRENA Assembly, WFES and Related Events Focus on Renewable Energy

20 January 2014: The fourth session of the IRENA Assembly convened from 18-19 January 2014 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It was preceded by the Africa Clean Energy Corridor High-level Meeting on 17 January, and followed by the World Future Energy Summit, which is taking place from 20-22 January 2014. In addition, the IRENA Renewable Energy Jobs Conference will take place in Abu Dhabi, to provide a platform for experts and policymakers to share knowledge, experiences and best practices on all aspects of renewable energy job creation. GEO-X Adopts GEO Geneva Declaration

17 January 2014: The Tenth Plenary Session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-X) convened from 15-16 January 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland, followed by a high-level panel on 16 January and the third GEO Ministerial Summit on 17 January. The Plenary and high-level discussions guided the Ministerial Summit, which agreed to renew the mandate for GEO through 2025 and adopted the 'GEO Geneva Declaration: Integrating Observations to Sustain Our Planet.' OWG Takes Up Climate, Cities and SCP

10 January 2014: The seventh session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) took place from 6-10 January 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, and addressed: sustainable cities and human settlements, sustainable transport; sustainable consumption and production (including chemicals and wastes); and climate change and disaster risk reduction. Delegates also began to discuss the “way forward” in the next phase of the OWG's work, with Co-Chair Macharia Kamau presenting options for how the OWG might work to devise a set of SDGs and their targets. The OWG will convene for its final stocktaking session in February. More.
