OWG Concludes Work, Submits SDG Proposal to UNGA

19 July 2014: The UN General Assembly's Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concluded its work, adopting by acclamation a report containing 17 proposed SDGs and 169 targets. The proposal will be submitted to the UN General Assembly for consideration and action at its 68th session. More.

Montreal Protocol OWEG 34 Addresses HFCs, MLF Replenishment

18 July 2014: Delegates at the 34th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG 34) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer considered: a progress report of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP); organizational issues related to the TEAP; the report of the TEAP on 2015-2017 Multilateral Fund (MLF) replenishment; nominations for essential-use exemptions and critical-use exemptions; alternatives to ozone depleting substances (ODS); the outcomes of the workshop on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) management; and a proposal for extending an exemption for laboratory and analytical uses. CCAC Approves New Initiative on Short-lived Climate Pollutants in Cities

17 July 2014: A meeting of the Working Group of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) shared updates on partner initiatives and discussed preparations for key climate meetings in September 2014. The working group also agreed to a new initiative concept on addressing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in cities. More.

CITES SC65 Takes Action on Asian Big Cats, Elephants, Rhinoceros and Cheetahs

11 July 2014: Participants at the sixty-fifth meeting of the Standing Committee (SC65) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) focused discussions on elephants, rhinoceros, Asian big cats, illegal trade in cheetahs, great apes, pangolins, ebony and rosewoods. Other topics addressed at the meeting included livelihoods, cooperation with other organizations, and species trade and conservation. More.

ECOSOC and HLPF Adopt Ministerial Declaration

9 July 2014: The 2014 high-level segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the High-level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF), which convened under the auspices of the Council, adopted a Ministerial Declaration following three weeks of informal intergovernmental negotiations. Aarhus Convention, PRTR Protocol Parties Discuss Access to Information and Implementation

4 July 2014: The fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission for Europe Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) considered the right of access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice, as well as genetically modified organisms and other agenda items. The second Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers considered promotion of the Protocol and capacity building, and procedures and mechanisms facilitating the implementation of the Protocol, among other items.
