CBD SBSTTA 20 and SBI 1 Forward Recommendations to COP 13

6 May 2016: The 20th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened from 25-30 April 2016 in Montreal, Canada, followed by the first meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI), which convened from 2-6 May 2016. SBSTTA 20 made progress on biodiversity mainstreaming, invasive alien species, the IPBES Assessment, an action plan on ecosystem restoration and guidance on marine debris. Although considerable work focused on synthetic biology, several questions remain to be considered by the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, in December 2016. SBI 1 piloted a voluntary peer-review mechanism of implementation and made progress on, inter alia, biodiversity mainstreaming and the SBI modus operandi. More.

Conference Calls on Governments to "Act Now" on SDGs, Paris Agreement

5 May 2016: A conference on 'Jump-starting the SDGs in Germany: Natural Resources and Sustainable Consumption and Production' addressed the challenges and opportunities of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Germany and worldwide. It focused on natural resources and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns, taking into consideration Germany's role as a major consumer of natural resources in a globalized world. Participants also focused on the potential role of partnerships in supporting effective implementation of the SDGs. More.

Habitat III Consultations Prioritize Actions for New Urban Agenda

29 April 2016: UN Member States, international organizations and stakeholders held a week-long session of Open-Ended Informal Consultative Meetings in preparation for the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). The Meeting aimed to advance discussions on the New Urban Agenda to be adopted at Habitat III, and to prioritize actions and identify transformative commitments to move towards sustainable cities. UNFF Expert Group Discusses Strategic Plan, Programme of Action

27 April 2016: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) has held the first meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG1). The Expert Group, created during UNFF11, is tasked with developing: proposals on a replacement for the reference to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the UN Forest Instrument with an appropriate reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the Strategic Plan for the period 2017-2030; and the quadrennial programme of work (4POW) for the period 2017-2020. CFS Working Groups Discuss Nutrition, SDGs and Connecting Smallholders to Markets

April 2016: Three discussion groups have advanced preparations for the 43rd Plenary Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 43), which will convene in October 2016. The third meeting of the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on nutrition of the CFS considered a draft proposal on CFS engagement in advancing nutrition, the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016-2025, and a draft Decision Box. An informal consultation on the Zero Draft of recommendations on Connecting Smallholders to Markets took place in preparation for the one-off OEWG taking place from 8-9 June 2016. And the third meeting of the OEWG on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the CFS focused on: a zero-draft proposal on CFS engagement in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; an invitation to CFS to provide input to the 2016 session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development; a mapping document of CFS scope and products in relation to SDG targets; and next steps.
