As of 15 June 2016, out of the 22 countries who will present voluntary national reviews during this year's High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), 15 have submitted summaries or other preliminary documents: Colombia, Germany, Georgia, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, Mexico, Montenegro, Republic of Korea, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda and Venezuela. Europe Ministers Translate 2030 Agenda into Concrete Commitments on Green Economy, Clean Air, ESD

10 June 2016: Participants at the Eighth Environment for Europe (EfE) Ministerial Conference adopted a Ministerial Declaration and agreed on a number of outcomes related to the green economy, air quality and human health, and education for sustainable development (ESD). During the Conference, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6) Assessment for the pan-European region. GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program and CBIT Trust Fund

9 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change. CFS Working Group Finalizes Draft Guidelines on Connecting Smallholders to Markets

9 June 2016: Held under the auspices of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Connecting Smallholders to Markets finalized a set of draft recommendations to governments aiming to address key challenges in and opportunities for improving the access of smallholder farmers to markets. The draft recommendations will be forwarded the to the 43rd Plenary Session of the CFS in October 2016. More.


First STI Forum Addresses Technology for SDGs, Way Forward

7 June 2016: During the inaugural meeting of the Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—STI Forum—participants discussed: the power of STI; enabling environments for STI; realizing the potential of STI for the SDGs; transformative technologies for SDGs; effective STI policy frameworks; or the experience of youth in using STI for sustainable development. Stakeholders Outline Views on New Urban Agenda Draft

7 June 2016: Approximately 110 stakeholder groups exchanged views with UN Member States and observers on the zero draft of the outcome document for the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), which was released in May 2016. Participants at the Habitat III Informal Hearings with Stakeholders held panel discussions on: key recommendations by the Co-Chairs of the General Assembly of Partners for Habitat III (GAP); the Quito Declaration, the expected political outcome of Habitat III; transformative commitments for sustainable urban development; effective implementation; implementation at the local level; follow-up and review; and partnerships for the New Urban Agenda. Trondheim Conference Addresses Linkages between Biodiversity and Agriculture

3 June 2016: Participants at the eighth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity recognized biodiversity and ecosystem services as essential in supporting agriculture in multiple ways and at all levels, stressing their integration into other sectors as essential in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Conference focused on the interlinkages between biodiversity and agriculture to develop food systems for a sustainable future. More.


CEM7 Launches New Campaigns on Advanced Cooling, Corporate Sourcing of Renewables, Energy Management

2 June 2016: The Seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7) took place from 1-2 June 2016 in San Francisco, California, US, in conjunction with the inaugural Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial and chaired by US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. Moniz noted that San Francisco was chosen as host city because of its role in innovative technology. On 1 June, the CEM met in closed-door discussions and, on 2 June, the CEM7's Open Press Public Private Action Summit convened. More.


Basel Convention Adopts 13 Strategic, Technical and Legal Decisions

2 June 2016: Delegates at the Tenth Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (OEWG 10) advanced work on technical, legal and strategic matters. OEWG 10 adopted 13 decisions on, inter alia: development of guidelines for environmentally sound management (ESM); technical guidelines on persistent organic pollutant (POPs) wastes; technical guidelines on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE); the creation of a new partnership for the ESM of household waste; and cooperation between the Basel Convention and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
