COP 22 Opens As Paris Agreement Enters into Force

November 2016: Just three days after the Paris Agreement entered into force on 4 November 2016, the Marrakech Climate Change Conference opened. The rapid entry into force was unexpected, according to the UNFCCC Secretariat, with more than 90 Parties joining the Agreement in the 10 months following its adoption on 12 December 2015. As stated by the UN, this was “extremely swift,” particularly given the thresholds required. More.


Committee on World Food Security Addresses Links with 2030 Agenda

October 2016: The 43rd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 43) considered, inter alia, learning from the first volunteer national reviews with regard to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Among other decisions, CFS 43 agreed that intersessional activities will continue on engagement in advancing the 2030 Agenda and on nutrition. The Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was tasked with elaborating CFS’ contribution to the 2017 session of the High Level Political Forum (HLPF). An OEWG on Urbanization and Rural Transformation will agree on a process to compile experiences and policy approaches for addressing food security and nutrition in the context of changing rural-urban dynamics. CRIC 15 Reviews Target Setting for SDG Target 15.3

October 2016: Delegates to the fifteenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 15) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) reviewed countries’ progress in setting voluntary targets towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 15.3, which includes a commitment to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) by 2030. Within the first year of the SDGs’ adoption, 102 countries have embarked on the process of setting voluntary targets to achieve SDG target 15.3. More.


Parties Amend Montreal Protocol to Address HFCs

October 2016: The 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 28) adopted the Kigali Amendment to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) described the agreement as “the single largest contribution the world has made towards keeping the global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius, a target agreed at the Paris Climate Conference last year.” More.
