Preparatory Committee Adopts Outcome on BBNJ

21 June 2017: The fourth session of the Preparatory Committee on the elements of a draft text of an international legally binding instrument (ILBI) under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) was the last session scheduled to finalize substantive recommendations on the elements of a draft text of an ILBI, so that the General Assembly can decide whether to convene an intergovernmental conference (IGC) to elaborate the text of the agreement. On the final night, delegates adopted an outcome that includes non-exclusive elements of a draft ILBI text that generated convergence among most delegations, a list of main issues on which there is divergence of views, with the indication that both do not reflect consensus, and a recommendation to the UN General Assembly to take a decision, as soon as possible, on the convening of an IGC. HLPF 2017 Considers 43 VNRs, Adopts Ministerial Declaration

19 July 2017: The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) concluded its 2017 meeting with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration on the theme, 'Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world.' The session heard reports from countries on their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), which outlined their plans and efforts to implement the SDGs. In addition, a High-Level General Debate took place during the second week, and thematic discussions also took place, to discuss challenges related to seven specific SDGs. More.


Montreal Protocol Convenes First Meeting Since Kigali

14 July 2017: Parties to the Montreal Protocol held their first meeting since the 28th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 28) to the Montreal Protocol, in October 2016, which adopted the Kigali Amendment to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Before the Kigali Amendment can be implemented, issues related to data reporting requirements, updating global warming potential figures for controlled substances, and approving destruction technologies for HFCs must be resolved.
