UNCCD COP 13 Discusses Implementation, Funding for SDG Target 15.3

15 September 2017: During the closing session of the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 13), COP 13 President Zhang Jianlong encouraged the youth to take action to combat desertification in the future. UNCCD Executive Secretary Monique Barbut affirmed that COP 13 took bold steps for the Convention, which now had a clear, action-oriented path forward. She summarized the new initiatives established during COP 13, including on drought, migration, gender, and sand and dust storms, as well as the launching of the Global Land Outlook and the LDN Fund (for efforts to achieve land degradation neutrality - SDG target 15.3). Zhang Jianlong gaveled COP 13 to a close at 6:45 pm. More.

IPCC 46 Approves Chapter Outlines for AR6

10 September 2017: The 46th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 46) has approved the chapter outlines for the three Working Group (WG) reports that, along with the Synthesis Report, will comprise the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. Following the approval of the chapter outlines by IPCC 46, which convened in Montreal, Canada, from 6-10 September 2017, the Panel will embark on the report author selection process. The WG reports are expected to be completed and approved in 2021. More.

MPA Congress Links People with Oceans

9 September 2017: Culminating in a high-level meeting and the approval of a Call to Action, the fourth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC4) highlighted the relationship between the ocean and communities worldwide, and the benefits that marine protected areas (MPAs) provide to millions of people. In a series of plenary sessions, symposia, workshops and other events, participants analyzed ways to combine the management of MPAs with progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources (SDG 14). More.

Asia-Pacific Summit Prioritizes Resource Efficiency, Anti-Pollution Measures

8 September 2017: Environment ministers at the first Asia-Pacific Ministerial Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, organized jointly by UN Environment and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, discussed measures to improve resource efficiency and combat pollution. Ministers emphasized the need for concerted action on environmental issues including waste management, transboundary pollution and marine litter. At the close of the Summit, they adopted a Ministerial Declaration and agreed to forward further recommendations to the third meeting of the UN Environment Assembly. More.
