International Seabed Authority Adopts Strategic Plan, Discusses Draft Regulations

29 July 2018: The second part of the 24th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Council made progress on the draft exploitation regulations on deep-seabed mining, while recognizing the need for further work on the payment mechanism, environmental protection and the Enterprise. The ISA Assembly adopted the Strategic Plan for 2019-2023, with many welcoming the open consultation that preceded it as well as the placing of the ISA’s mandate in the context of the SDGs. More.

HLPF Concludes with Vote on Ministerial Declaration, Concerns about “Power of Mandate” and Those Left Behind

18 July 2018: The UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) concluded its 2018 meeting by voting to adopt a Ministerial Declaration on the theme, ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies.’ The eight-day session also: heard 46 countries’ Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), highlighting plans and efforts to implement the SDGs; reviewed six of the 17 SDGs; conducted thematic reviews; held a discussion on progress in “leaving no one behind;” and convened a High-Level General Debate. SBSTTA, SBI Discuss Progress on Biodiversity Targets and Protocols

13 July 2018: The 22nd meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 22) and second meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 2) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) met in July to address a series of scientific and implementation-related issues, in preparation for the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 14) to the CBD.
