Ozone MOP Prepares for January 2019 Entry into Force of Kigali Amendment

9 November 2018: Through decisions on data reporting, destruction technologies and access to energy-efficient technologies, the thirtieth Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 30) took key steps to pave the way for implementation of the Kigali Amendment on Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), while its decision on the ExCom cost guidelines for the HFC phase-down ensures the input of all parties to that instrument before the guidelines are finalized. MOP 30 also took action to address the issues raised by the recent discovery of CFC-11 emissions. More.

Ramsar COP13 Adopts Resolutions on Wetlands and Blue Carbon Ecosystems, Sustainable Urbanization

29 October 2018: The 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP13) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands focused on the theme, ‘Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future,’ and concluded with the adoption of 25 resolutions. More.

CFS 45 Expresses “Deepest Concern” About Rising Hunger, Decides to Develop Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition

19 October 2018: The 45th session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 45) expressed “its deepest concern about the rising number of food insecure people in the world and the negative trends in hunger and malnutrition.” The Committee also endorsed terms of reference for work on policy guidance on food systems and nutrition. Water Convention MOP Adopts New Strategy

12 October 2018: Parties at the eighth Meeting of the Parties (MOP8) to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) welcomed Chad and Senegal as the first countries from outside the Pan-European region to accede to the Convention, and adopted a new global strategy. IPCC Special Report: Limiting Global Warming to 1.5°C Will Require “Unprecedented” Transitions

8 October 2018: The 48th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-48) approved a Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR15) and its Technical Summary, and adopted a Summary for Policymakers (SPM) following its line-by-line discussion. According to the Panel, limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5ºC will require “unprecedented” transitions in all aspects of society, including energy, agricultural, urban and industrial systems.
