Happy New Year and welcome to our sixth year of publishing Linkages Update. 2007 promises to be a busy year for those following international sustainable development policy. From its designation as Year of the Dolphin, International Polar Year and possibly the Year of Science and Technology in Africa to the focus on energy in the UN Commission on Sustainable Development and post-2012 climate change commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol, and all of the events in between, 2007 promises to find decision makers engaged in many key discussions that will affect the sustainability of the planet.

Lynn Wagner, Ph.D.
Editor, Linkages Update and MEA Bulletin

We at IISD Reporting Services are currently organizing our teams of experts who will be reporting from many of these events and helping you monitor these deliberations throughout 2007. From our African Regional Coverage Initiative, which will bring you news from the African Union Summit on Science and Technology in January, to our “Your Meeting Bulletin” coverage, which will bring you news from the Country-Led Initiative in Support of the UN Forum on Forest’s Multi-Year Programme of Work in February, to our slate of Earth Negotiations Bulletin meetings, starting with the UNEP Governing Council in February and running through to the Climate Change meetings in December, we look forward to a new year of sustainable development events and decisions.

Due to our parent organization’s accounting calendar, our budget must balance at the end of March. As a result, our Director, Langston J. “Kimo” Goree, is currently undertaking a fundraising blitz to ensure that we can cover workshop and subsidiary body meetings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification during the first quarter of 2007.  For more details, visit http://enb.iisd.org/enb2007.html. Please let us know if your organization is able to contribute to our 2007 coverage. And happy reading in 2007.
