Addis Ababa, 31 January—Heads of State and Government of the African Union agreed to designate 2007 as Africa’s year for scientific innovations at the eighth AU Summit, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Summit, which consisted of a series of meetings from 22-30 January 2007, saw delegates addressing the themes of “Science, Technology and Scientific Research for Development” and “Climate Change in Africa.” Meeting outcomes included agreement of a 20-year continental strategy for biotechnology, and a decision to proceed with establishing a Pan-African Intellectual Property Organization. MontrĂ©al, 1 February—Over 60 experts at the North American Regional Consultation of the Consultative Process Towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB) exchanged views and discussed various options on a possible IMoSEB during a 30-31 January 2007 meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Participants did not achieve consensus on a new mechanism, but did generate views and proposals that are expected to contribute to future discussions on the topic. More.

Paris, 2 February—The Tenth Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I has adopted its contribution to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), titled “Climate Change 2007: the Physical Science Basis.” The Working Group’s Summary for Policy Makers was agreed at a meeting held in Paris from 29 January to 1 February. The Group found that there is more than a 90 percent probability that human action has contributed towards recent climate change, up from its estimate of a more than 66 percent probability in 2001.
