World Mountain Forum. 2016

The 2016 World Mountain Forum (WMF 2016), scheduled to take place from 17-20 October 2016 in Mbale, Uganda, will convene under the theme of “Mountains for our Future” and discuss sustainable mountain development (SMD) in the context of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The WMF aims to bring together sustainable mountain development stakeholders from around the world to foster political dialogue and promote collaborative action to protect mountain ecosystems and communities. This meeting of the WMF is jointly organized by the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda, with financial and technical support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) as well as diverse partners involved in the SDC-funded Sustainable Mountain Development for Global Change (SMD4GC) programme.

The Forum will convene sessions under four key sub-themes: mountains and climate change; mountain communities and livelihoods; mountain ecosystem services; and sustainable mountain agriculture. Through presentation and discussions, WMF 2016 will showcase local, regional and global experiences in SMD following the recommendations of WMF 2014; identify opportunities and challenges for global SMD; and discuss how to effectively implement the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. WMF 2016 is expected to produce outcomes that will galvanize collaborative action, inform the implementation of the SDGs, and guide mountain-related interventions in on-going international policy processes.
