Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Global Change Institute, University of Queensland, and coordinating lead author of the Oceans chapter in the 5th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report, delivered a keynote address on “Positioning the ocean within the global action landscape.”

A panel discussion was held under the theme “Perspectives on ocean challenges, opportunities for transformation.” This discussion was moderated by Zeinab Badawi, BBC Anchor, and included: Cristina Rumbaitis del Rio, Senior Associate Director, Rockefeller Foundation; Fatou Mboob, Executive Director, TRY Oyster Women’s Association, The Gambia; Lori Kennedy, Louisbourg Seafood Ltd; Rolph Payet, Minister for Environment, Seychelles; Stephen Hall, Director General, WorldFish; and Sebastian Troeng, Senior Vice President, Conservation International.

In the afternoon, three working groups met in parallel: on balancing growth and conservation; on private sector and social equity; and on areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) and exclusive economic zones (EEZs).

IISD RS will produce daily web updates on the Summit. A full summary report will be available on Sunday, 27 April.
