The Global Oceans Action Summit reconvened today in The Hague, The Netherlands.

In the morning, delegates met in the three Working Groups that had started their work on Tuesday. The Working Group on balancing growth and conservation addressed potential solutions; the Working Group on private sector and social equity discussed concrete actions; and the Working Group on areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) and exclusive economic zones (EEZs) focused on cooperation.

Delegates then met in a brief plenary session, chaired by Dutch Minister of Agriculture Sharon Dijksma. They heard a presentation by William Moomaw, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, entitled “Perspectives on ocean health and productivity – implications for fisheries.” They also heard final reports from all three working groups on their respective discussions and recommendations.

In the afternoon, three new Working Groups started their work, each meeting in two different sessions. The Working Group on models for governance addressed integrated management of the marine environment, and creating the conditions for best-practice community management. The Working Group on financing mechanisms focused on insights from public, private and multilateral institutions, and on financing the transition to sustainable blue economies – the potential for blue bonds. The Working Group on partnerships discussed public partnerships for transformative action, and lessons from effective partnerships for ocean health.

IISD RS is producing brief daily web updates on the Summit. A full summary report will be available on Sunday, 27 April.
