Fourth Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity Beyond Areas of National Jurisdiction

31 May - 3 June 2011 | UN Headquarters, New York, United States of America

Highlights for Friday, 3 June 2011
On Friday morning, Co-Chair Linjzaad reported on progress in the Friends of the Co-Chairs group, noting that a smaller group of Friends continued discussions on Thursday evening and produced a revised set of draft recommendations on which persisting difficulties were expressed by some delegations.

Plenary then considered three proposals: the draft produced by the “small group” of Friends; compromise text put forward jointly by the G-77/China, the EU and Mexico; and a proposal by the US. Following an exchange of views in plenary, the “small group” of Friends reconvened.

In the late afternoon Co-Chair Lijnzaad presented a revised version of the draft recommendations produced by the “small group” of Friends, which were adopted by consensus, including on initiating a process on the legal framework on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The Co-Chairs closed the meeting at 6:20 pm.
