Highlights for Wednesday, 19 November 2008
The city of Doha.

The high level segment of COP-8 to the Vienna Convention and MOP-20 to the Montreal Protocol convened for its first day in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday, 19 November, 2008.

In the morning, delegates attended the opening of the high level segment and heard opening addresses by Abdullah bin Mubarak bin Aaboud al-Midhadi, Minister of Environment, Qatar, and MOP-19 President, as well as Djibo Leyti Ka, Minister of State in charge of the Environment, the Protection of Nature, Retention Basins and Artificial Lakes, Senegal.

Delegates also heard presentations from the Assessment Panels and the Multilateral Fund. Ministers and heads of delegation then made national statements.

Contact groups on destruction, methyl bromide, replenishment and essential use MDI and campaign production convened in parallel throughout the day.

Delegates elected Róbert Tóth, Hungary, as MOP-20 President, and he co-chaired the high level segment.
Patali Ranawaka, Minister for Environment, Sri Lanka, was elected as COP-7 President, and co-chaired the high level segment.
Djibo Leity Ka, Minister of Environment, Senegal, and the President of the Bureau of COP 7 of the Vienna Convention, said major activities in the last three years included strengthening of ozone monitoring and research networks.
