Twenty-second Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer

Highlights for Thursday, 11 November 2010
UNEP

Montreal Protocol MOP-22 convened for its fourth day in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday, 11 November 2010.

In the morning, delegates attended the opening of the High-level segment. Delegates then convened in plenary throughout the day to hear presentations by heads of delegations.

Contact groups on OSD destruction, QPS uses of methyl bromide, evaluation of the financial mechanism and replenishment of the MLF, an informal group on low-GWP alternatives, and the Budget Committee met throughout the day.

Climate Change Policy & Practice

Morning High-level segment
Michael Church, Minister of Environment, Grenada, and MOP-21 President, applauded the universal ratification of the Protocol and appealed to the few parties that have not ratified the amendments to do so expeditiously.

Trairong Suwankiri, Deputy Prime Minister, Thailand, opened the High-Level segment of MOP-22.

Rajendra Shende, Head, OzonAction Branch, Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, UNEP, receiving a certificate of appreciation from Jesca Eriyo, Minister of State for Environment, Uganda, on behalf of African parties.

EEAP Co-Chair Jan van der Leun being thanked by Trairong Suwankiri, Deputy Prime Minister, Thailand, for his long-standing commitment to the Protocol.

SAP Co-Chair A.R. Ravishankara, US, emphasized that the SAP findings strengthen its 2004 conclusions that the Montreal Protocol is achieving its objectives.
EEAP Co-Chair Janet Bornman, New Zealand, presented on the EEAP’s findings on links between climate change, ozone depletion and UV radiation.
TEAP Co-Chair Lambert Kuijpers, the Netherlands, presented the preliminary TEAP assessment report, and outlined the content of each TOC report.

Around the Conference
Trairong Suwankiri, Deputy Prime Minister, Thailand, officially launches UNEP's new Bangkok to Cancun and Beyond virtual tour blog, which highlights interlinkages between ozone issues and climate change.

The original graph that first depicted the decreasing thickness of the Antarctic ozone layer, here presented at a side event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctic ozone depletion.
