Global Meeting on Education in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

18-19 March 2013 | Dakar, Senegal

Highlights for Tuesday, 19 March 2013
The Global Meeting on Education in the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda convened for its final day on 19 March, in Dakar, Senegal. In the morning, participants heard a video message from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, on the development priorities emerging from the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Participants also heard presentations on different possible scenarios for education in the post-2015 development agenda with a number of organizations presenting their visions on this issue. Participants then met in discussion groups to address recommendations for education in the post-2015 development agenda.

In the afternoon, participants reconvened to hear feedback on the group discussions. Participants generally agreed that equitable access to quality basic education should be the main tenet for education in the post-2015 agenda. They also highlighted the need for goals and targets to be measurable, easily communicable and adaptable to national circumstances. Participants also emphasized the need for sustainable sources of financing, with many suggesting that accessing domestic sources of financing should become a goal within the post-2015 agenda.

During the closing session, emerging recommendations from the discussion over the previous two days were presented, and the overarching goal of “equitable quality lifelong learning for all” was announced. Stressing the importance of partnerships for achieving progress in attaining development goals, Joseph Pierre Ndiaye, Cabinet Director at Senegal’s Ministry of Education closed the meeting at 6:52pm.
