GUIDELINES FOR THE
ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND MANAGEMENT OF POPS WASTES TRAINING TOOL
(Stockholm Convention, 2008)
The Stockholm Convention Secretariat has developed a Technical
Guidelines for the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of Persistent
Organic Pollutants (POPs) wastes training tool. This electronic Training
Tool provides information on the technical guidelines on POPs wastes in
a simple and interactive manner. The tool is available online and has
been sent out on CD ROMs to the Stockholm Convention Focal Points and
the Basel Convention Focal Points for distribution to relevant persons.

DOWNSIZING DEVELOPMENT: AN INTRODUCTION TO NANO-SCALE TECHNOLOGIES AND
THE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GLOBAL SOUTH
(NGLS/ETC Group, May 2008)
This new book considers the potential role of nano-scale technologies on
development and the Millennium Development Goals. Commissioned by the UN
Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS), the book considers the rapid
growth of the nanotechnology market, which is expected to reach US$1
trillion in size by 2015. The book considers the absence of a regulatory
environment and the need for serious research into the long-term impact
of nanotechnologies, particularly for the developing world. The book was
launched at a panel discussion held as UN headquarters on 14 May, in
parallel with the 16th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable
Development. The

THE RISE IN PESTICIDE
USE
(Friends of the Earth, 2007)
In this study, Friends of the Earth International finds that "Roundup
Ready" crops, the most extensively grown genetically modified (GM) crop,
have led to an increase in pesticide use. The report also finds that GM
crops do not yield more than existing crop varieties and that Roundup
Ready soya has a 5-10% lower yield than conventional varieties. The
study.
