Dais during the Opening Ceremony

Following the 49th meeting of the Standing Committee and regional meetings, the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP12) opened on Tuesday afternoon, 2 June 2015, in Punta del Este, Uruguay, under the theme, "Wetlands for our Future." Delegates heard opening remarks, with several speakers underscoring linkages with the Sustainable Development Goals.

COP12 will continue until 9 June and address, among others: a strategic plan for 2016-2021; a proposed new framework for delivery of scientific and technical advice and guidance on the Convention; peatlands, climate change and wise use; a call to action to ensure and protect the water requirements of wetlands for the present and the future; wetlands and disaster risk reduction; and wetland city accreditation.
