.
OWG delegates during the discussion of economic growth, industrialization, infrastructure, and energy.
OWG-10On Wednesday, 2 April 2014, the OWG discussed the focus areas on economic growth, industrialization, infrastructure, and energy into goals and targets, and heard the views of Major Groups on all 19 focus areas. Some Member States and Major Groups called for a goal on “sustainable, inclusive, and equitable economic growth,” with the issues of infrastructure, industrialization, and employment forming targets of this goal. Other Member States called for a goal on “sustained and inclusive economic growth,” along with stand-alone goals on the issues of industrialization and infrastructure. On the issue of energy, most speakers supported an SDG on “sustainable energy for all,” with targets in the areas of universal access, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. Other target proposals included the elimination of harmful fossil fuel subsidies and strengthening transparency of energy markets.

The Major Groups gave a series of statements on each focus area, with specific proposals for goals and targets in each area. Proposals from the Groups included calls for stand-alone goals on: universal healthcare; universal social protection; full employment and decent jobs; ecosystems and biodiversity; gender equality and women’s empowerment; SCP; environmentally-friendly energy; climate change; and governance.

At the conclusion of the day, Co-Chair Kőrösi said that the OWG was coming very close to a concise sense of common objectives, and said he looked forward to the Thursday morning discussion on cities and human settlements, SCP, and climate change.
Daniella Diz, High Seas Alliance, presents on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, oceans and seas during the debate with Major Groups.
