Highlights for Monday, 16 June 2014

 On Monday morning, Co-Chairs Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, and Csaba Kőrösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary, opened the meeting. They introduced the “zero draft” of the goals and targets on sustainable development of the post-2015 development agenda, which contain 17 goals and 212 targets, and added that getting the right balance was not easy. With ten formal working days until “the end of this journey,” Amb. Kamau pleaded with delegates that the time for long statements is over, saying we need focused attention on goals and targets so “we can sharpen this document into something we can all be proud of.”
After a few introductory statements, Co-Chair Kamau led a discussion on the method of work. Delegates agreed to suspend the formal session and begin discussing the goals and targets in an informal session. They agreed to begin with proposed Goal 7 (Ensure access to affordable, sustainable and reliable modern energy services for all), since the first six goals had been discussed in informal-informal consultations from 9-11 June. Delegates also discussed proposed Goals 8 (Promote strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and decent work for all) and 9 (Promote sustainable industrialization).
An evening session was held to hear preliminary views on a revised list of goals resulting from the previous week’s informal-informal discussions.
