Highlights for Wednesday, 16 July 2014
.
OWG-13The UN General Assembly's Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continued its 13th session at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, 16 July 2014.

Co-Chair Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, opened the meeting by noting that the “end game” has begun. He likened the OWG to a marathon, where the last mile is “unbelievably mentally and physically challenging.” He added, “Everything in your mind tells you to give up and say ‘this is ridiculous,’ and yet it is the last mile that gives you success.” The OWG is now in the last mile, he said, urging delegations to be focused in order to “cross the finish line” on Friday after this year-and-a-half long marathon.

In the morning, delegates reviewed a revised proposal for the 17 SDG headings. Afterwards, the Co-Chairs took delegates through a second reading of the first 8 goals, based on text revised following the informal-informal consultations held from 9-11 July. These included:

*Proposed goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
*Proposed goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and adequate nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
*Proposed goal 3. Attain healthy lives for all at all ages
*Proposed goal 4. Provide inclusive and equitable quality education and life-long learning opportunities for all
*Proposed goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls everywhere
*Proposed goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
*Proposed goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, sustainable, and modern energy for all
*Proposed goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

In the course of discussions, the Co-Chairs reminded Member States that particularly contentious topics would be held for further consideration by small groups, after going through the targets for all 17 goals.
