L-R: Jomo Kwane Sundaram, Assistant Director-General, FAO, and Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford University Human Development Initiative
On Thursday morning, delegates continued the moderated exchange of views on conceptualizing the SDGs and the SDG process. The discussion on poverty eradication began in the afternoon with a keynote address by Abhijit Banerjee, International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Banerjee emphasized the need to choose SDG outcomes carefully, but not dictate the process of achieving them; focus on outcomes that are meaningful for people, not only easy for bureaucracies to achieve; look beyond averages to reach out to marginalized groups and populations; and take the idea of partnerships more seriously, to involve civil society actors.

Olav Kjørven, UN Development Programme (UNDP), introduced an issues note on poverty eradication prepared by the UN Technical Support Team.

A moderated exchange of views on poverty eradication then took place, including presentations by two panelists – Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Assistant Director-General, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford University Poverty and Human Development Initiative.
