Highlights for Monday, 17 June 2013
The fourth session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals convened on Monday, 17 June 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York. The two issue clusters for discussion at this meeting are employment and decent work for all, social protection, youth, education and culture; and health and population dynamics. In the morning, Homi Kharas, Brookings Institution and lead author and Executive Secretary for UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP), presented the Panel’s report. Greg Vines, Deputy Director-General, International Labour Organisation, presented the keynote address on employment and decent work for all. Following introduction of the three UN Technical Support Team Issues Briefs on Employment and Decent Work, Social Protection, and Education and Culture, delegates had an opportunity to comment.

In the afternoon, there were panel presentations followed by interactive exchange of views on “Employment and decent work for all, social protection, youth, education and culture”. Panelists included: Dr. Haroon Bhorat, University of Cape Town, Dr. Karen Mundy, University of Toronto, and Mr. Fernando Filgueira, Consultant, former Collaborating Researcher for United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).

Homi Kharas, Brookings Institution and lead author and Executive Secretary for UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP), presented the Panel’s report.

Ambassador Usman Sarki, Nigeria, described the issues of employment, education, and social protection as necessary for the “wholesomeness of life,” and emphasized the consideration of the national situation in their implementation.

During a side event, Paula Caballero Gómez (Colombia) presented the “Dashboard Proposal” on how to arrive at a post-2015 agenda that is universal and responsive to national circumstances.
