Highlights for Tuesday, 18 June 2013
The fourth session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continued on Tuesday, 18 June 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York. In the morning, delegates concluded the general exchange of views on employment and decent work for all, social protection, youth, education and culture. Delegates examined the interlinkages between the issues and how they can be incorporated into the SDGs.

In the afternoon, the OWG began consideration of health and population dynamics. In a keynote address, Dr. Anarfi Asamoa-Baah, Deputy Director-General, World Health Organization, observed that consensus is beginning to emerge on having a single overarching goal in the SDGs, rather than multiple health goals, as in the MDGs. In a second keynote address, Hans Rosling, Karolinska Institute, Gapminder Foundation, provided animated statistical data on demographics, using declining worldwide rates of child mortality to show that people are not unwilling to use contraception, once they have access to it. An interactive panel discussion featured Paulina K. Makinwa-Adebusoye, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, who presented on the state of maternal deaths, child mortality, pregnancy risks, and population dynamics. Jeanette Vega, Rockefeller Foundation, proposed that universal healthcare should be the umbrella SDG for health in the post-2015 framework.
