The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Malaysia Chapter, SDSN Japan, and the UN University Institute for the Advanced study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) are organizing an international symposium and workshop on the theme, “Road to 2030: Global and National Perspectives on Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 29 February to 1 March.

The symposium will take place on the morning of 29 February. Keynote speakers and panelists from six countries in Asia and Europe will discuss national implementation of the SDGs, and the role of science, technology and innovation (STI).

Immediately after the symposium, a workshop on national perspectives will take place over the next one and a half days. The workshop will compare national experiences of implementation in several countries, discussing: mapping of national preparedness for SDG delivery; stakeholder contributions; the role of science in follow-up and review; and linkages between the national, regional and global levels of implementation.

Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), will open both events. The workshop and symposium are supported by the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), the Office of the Science Advisor, the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS Malaysia), SDSN Australia/Pacific University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the Institute for Environment and Development at UKM (LESTARI), Keio Research Institute at SFC, the Project on Sustainability Transformation beyond 2015 (Post2015, also known as the S-11 project of the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund), Japan.
