The Caribbean Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States opened in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday morning, 2 July 2013. Following the opening plenary —which featured statements from Arun Kashyup, UNDP Jamaica; Amb. Marlene Moses (Nauru), Chair of AOSIS; Nikhil Seth, Director, UN Division for Sustainable Development (via Skype); and Robert Pickersgill, Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Jamaica—delegates began to address the objectives of the meeting:

bulletAssess the progress to date and remaining gaps in implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation;
bulletSeek a renewed political commitment;
bulletIdentify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS; and
bulletIdentify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS to be considered in the elaboration of the post-2015 UN development agenda.

The first panel discussion and interactive discussion focused on the SIDS sustainable development agenda from a Caribbean perspective. In the afternoon, the focus was on regional issues on the SIDS sustainable development agenda with panels and discussions on: climate change and natural and manmade disasters; sustainable energy; macroeconomics and trade; social policy issues; and protection, conservation and sustainable use of the region’s natural resources.
