The Caribbean Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States continued in Kingston on Wednesday.

The first panel of the day focused on regional, international and UN system organizations in the implementation and support to the Caribbean SIDS sustainable development agenda. The panel featured presentations from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Development Programme, the UN Office for Least Developed Countries, Land-Locked Developing Countries and SIDS (OHRLLS), the UN Population Fund, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Caribbean Community. Delegates discussed South-South cooperation, national councils on sustainable development, reporting mechanisms, monitoring and evaluation, and broadening cooperation and information sharing on sustainable development.

The second session examined the positioning of SIDS within the emerging new UN institutional framework (post Rio+20 outcomes and the post-2015 development agenda). Presentations and discussion focused on the new universal UN Environment Assembly of UNEP, the 10-year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, UNEP’s medium-term strategy, the report of the High Level Panel on the post-2015 development agenda, and the new UN high-level political forum that is replacing the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

In the afternoon, delegates heard from Major Groups on their contribution to the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation. Discussion focused on how to create a Caribbean Major Group forum to enable Major Groups to share their concerns and best practices. At the end of the day, government delegates met in a closed session to discuss the outcome document, which had been put together by a drafting group that met late Tuesday and most of the day on Wednesday.
