African Soil Seminar

IISD Reporting Services - Global Soil Week Co-hosted by ministries of agriculture of Kenya, Ethiopia, Benin and Burkina Faso, this seminar will address the theme of “Soil Restoration for Achieving the 2063 and 2030 Agendas in Africa: Linking Global Ambitions to Local Needs.” The meeting is convened in follow up to the 2015 Global Soil Week, where African stakeholders called for the creation of a regional platform for sustainable soil and land management.

Discussions will be organized around six thematic threads: soil carbon and climate change; food security and nutrition; land governance; financing soil restoration; water management; and urban-rural continuities. These themes explore interlinkages among sustainable development, climate change adaptation and resilience issues and help link achievements of the goals of the 2063 Agenda “The future for Africa we want,” the 2030 Agenda of the UN and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Facilitating Partners for the meeting, which is organized under the auspices of the “ONE World – No Hunger,” project supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), include GRAF, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), TMG, and the Global Soil Forum – Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) Potsdam.

IISD Reporting Services, through its ENB+ Meeting Coverage, has provided a summary of the African Soil Seminar on the 3rd of December 2016, which is available in HTML and PDF.
