The fifth edition of the Global Soil Week (GSW 2019) will convene from 27-30 May 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya, on the theme ‘Creating Enabling Environments for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Africa.’
GSW 2019 is expected to:
- Explore how to create an enabling environment that links the goals of improved food security in rural areas, with enhanced adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers, achieving land degradation neutrality, and the sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources.
- Contribute to a shared understanding of what is needed to support investments in sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture sustain over time and how to achieve scale.
- Demonstrate that progress in creating an enabling environment for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture is possible, even with small-scale investments in locally driven learning and innovation processes.
- Facilitate dialogue between representatives of relevant regional initiatives, national governments, municipalities, and civil society on their respective roles and contributions in creating an enabling environment for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
GSW 2019 will be organized into technical and high-level segments. On the first two days, a technical session will involve technical experts reviewing implementation experiences in areas such as financing mechanisms, provision of extension services and land governance. The discussions are also expected to identify follow up actions required to create the necessary enabling environments for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
A high-level session will convene on the final two days. This session will focus on reviewing actions proposed during the technical segment and facilitating exchanges among national governments, regional programmes, and other stakeholders on how to implement the identified actions and strategies.
GSW 2019 is being co-organized by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and TMG Think Tank for Sustainability and their partners, with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Economic Development (BMZ) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
