The World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability opened in the Supreme Court of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, on Sunday 17 June 2012. Judges, prosecutors, auditors and legal experts from around the globe attended the opening ceremony. Participants heard presentations from Achim Steiner speaking on behalf of UN Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon, as well as Supreme Court judges from Argentina, Brazil and Malaysia, and ministers from the Republic of Korea and Brazil. Organizers of the meeting, including the Organization of American States (OAS) and INTOSAI, also addressed the Congress. The panelists, including the two keynote speakers, Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, and Antonio Herman Benjamin, Judge of the High Court of Brazil, addressed among other issues, the need for a change in paradigm, or legal ethics, when interpreting law to incorporate the interests of the collective and the interests of future generations. Many highlighted the rate of degradation is faster than the rate of corrective measures promoted through policy and law, noting transformational change is needed and judges must take a proactive role in promoting it.
