Summary Highlights of the Meeting

Friday 28 March 2014

On Friday, delegates convened in open-ended contact groups on the science-policy interface, chemicals and waste, and in plenary to discuss preparations for UNEA for its sessions in 2014 and 2016. In the afternoon, the CPR Bureau met with heads of regional groups to agree on intersessional work and preparations for UNEA in June.

During the closing plenary in the afternoon, delegates agreed to forward draft UNEA decisions to the 127th meeting of the CPR for further consideration. CPR Chair Soemarno closed the meeting at 6:42pm.

Thursday 27 March 2014

On Thursday morning, delegates convened in open-ended contact group sessions to address the budget and programme of work (POW) and the science-policy interface (SPI). In the afternoon, contact group discussions on chemicals and waste management took place. In plenary, delegates considered the rules of procedure (RoP) of UNEA and participated in a thematic and programmatic debate on the role of UNEA in the UN system.

Wednesday 26 March 2014

On Wednesday morning, delegates convened in plenary to consider draft decisions, as well as progress reports on the work of the Environment Management Group (EMG), the mid-term review of the Montevideo Programme IV, and the state of the environment. In the afternoon delegates continued consideration of the state of the environment before addressing chemicals and wastes, and a draft decision on promoting air quality through UNEP.

On Tuesday morning delegates convened in plenary to consider stakeholder engagement, the science-policy interface (SPI), contributions by regional environment ministerial forums and the access-to-information policy. In the afternoon delegates addressed: the process to prepare a UN system-wide strategy on the environment; consolidation of UNEP headquarters functions in Nairobi; international water quality guidelines for ecosystems; and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Plaform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). A working contact group on budget and POW also convened in the afternoon.
