Highlights for Friday, 26 February 2010
On Friday, delegates met in the Committee of the Whole (COW) in the morning, to consider outstanding draft decisions and in plenary, which adopted five decisions on IPBES, strengthening environmental response in Haiti, oceans, financing options for chemicals and wastes and environmental law. In the afternoon, delegates convened in closing plenary, where the President's Summary on the outcome of the ministerial consultations was introduced. Delegates adopted the report of the COW as well as three decisions on IEG, enhanced coordination across the UN, including EMG and follow-up report on the environmental situation in the Gaza strip. Delegates thanked the Government of Indonesia for their hospitality and expressed satisfaction with the successful conclusion of the meeting. GC/GMEF President Dulić gaveled the meeting to a close at 4:29 pm.

Highlights for Thursday, 25 February 2010

On Thursday morning, delegates convened in five parallel Ministerial Round Tables on the topic of the Green Economy. In the afternoon delegates convened in a high level Ministerial discussion on ecosystems and biodiversity. The Committee of the Whole convened throughout the day and approved draft decisions on environmental law and chemical financing. Drafting groups on International Environmental Governance and the Nusa Dua Declaration convened throughout the day.

Highlights for Wednesday, 24 February 2010

On Wednesday morning, the ExCOPs convened in a final plenary in which the COPs of all three Conventions simultaneously adopted an omnibus decision. The closure of the ExCOPs was followed by the opening ceremony for GCSS-11/GMEF, featuring President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia. In the remainder of the morning and in the afternoon, delegates met in ministerial consultations and the Committee of the Whole. Drafting groups also met during the afternoon.

On Tuesday, delegates to the ExCOPs convened in an open-ended joint working group (OEWG), which met in the morning and afternoon. Contact groups on a review mechanism and decision-making convened in the morning and afternoon, and a contact group on joint managerial functions convened in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Highlights for Monday, 22 February 2010

The Simultaneous Extraordinary Meeting of the Conferences of the Parties (ExCOPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions convened Monday 22 February 2010. In the morning, delegates convened in plenary for the opening of the simultaneous extraordinary meetings of the ExCOPs, at which the respective COP Presidents of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions and the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) participated in a signing of the commemorative postal first day cover. The opening was followed by an open-ended joint working group (OEWG) which met in the morning and afternoon. Three contact groups on joint activities, review of coordination and cooperation and joint managerial functions convened in the afternoon and evening.

Highlights for the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum

GMGSF-11 (formerly known as the Global Civil Society Forum) convened Sunday 21 February and Monday 22 February, prior to the Eleventh Special Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/ Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-11/GMEF) (Bali, 24-26 February). The first day of the GMGSF included the traditional dialogue with Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP. It also addressed issues relating to the Simultaneous Extraordinary Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (ExCOPs) (22-24 February, Bali). Under the theme "Environment in the multilateral system," GMGSF-11 also considered International Environmental Governance and sustainable development, the "Green Economy," and biodiversity and ecosystems. The Forum also discussed the Rio+20 Summit planned for 2012.
