The side event ‘Enhancing Progress towards Aichi Target 11: Protected Planet and the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas’ followed the launch of the 2018 Protected Planet Report, which assesses the state of protected areas. Panelists highlighted: the roll-out of monthly online updates for providing real-time information; the importance of effective conservation measures to avoid creation of “paper parks”; and the growing use of the IUCN Green List, a global certification programme for protected and conserved areas. Panelists shared country experiences with protected area management and adoption of the Green List approach.
