Tommy Koh continued to hold informal consultations on the issue of a desertification convention. It appears as though the US has changed its position, now accepting the idea of an international desertification convention to be convened by 1994 aimed at benefitting those countries facing serious drought and desertification. Previously, the US had supported a regional convention for Africa. A number of other developed countries, however, are still unwilling to support a "global" desertification convention, insisting on a regional treaty.
