UNCED WORKING GROUP HIGHLIGHTS: 5 NOVEMBER 1992

The first substantive session of Ambassador Razali Ismail's open-ended ad hoc working group on UNCED follow-up measures took place on Thursday, 5 November 1992. Razali reminded the delegates of the five resolutions under its mandate and expressed his wish that the group finish its work by the end of November.

General discussion followed on the endorsing resolution, "Report of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development" (A/C.2/47/WG.I/CRP.7). Many countries emphasized the need to streamline Razali's draft to include consensus language agreed to in Rio and to remove paragraphs more appropriate for inclusion in the CSD resolution. Discussion proceeded paragraph-by-paragraph through the text. Pakistan, speaking on behalf of the G-77, was only able to comment on the first six paragraphs as the G-77 had not completed its review of the text. After the first reading, Razali adjourned the meeting early and appealed to the G-77 to conclude its work so that he might reformulate his draft.
