UNSO:

Samuel Nyambi, Acting Director of the United Nations Sudano Sahelian Office, said that resources allocated to combatting desertification have continued to decrease over the last few years in spite of renewed attention to the problem, the expectations generated at Rio, and the negotiation of the Convention. While pursuing the elaboration of the desertification Convention, it is urgent that funding is also made available for the implementation of the six programme areas of Chapter 12 of Agenda 21. To be effective, the desertification Convention should mobilize adequate human and financial resources and serve as an instrument for fostering greater national, regional and international commitment, actions and cooperation. UNSO is supporting the participation of 22 Sudano-Sahelian countries in the negotiations, providing technical and substantive reports to the African countries, and assisting the Secretariat.
